Text: Jame Stewert, Calculus, early transcendentals - edition 4.
We will cover chapters 5-8, 10-11.
Tutoring:
Drop in tutoring is available in Nightingale at times to be announced.
(Probably M-Th 9AM-9PM and F 9AM-5PM). Private tutoring can be arranged by visiting the START center.
Homework:
I will assign homework on a daily basis. Some of this homework is to be turned in and graded. For most homework problems (and tests and quizzes), a complete solution consists of not only the answer but all the work required to get the answer. This is considered a bare minimum of homework to complete. You should also do more of the problems in the book on your own. Late homework will not be accepted. I will drop 3 homework scores when computing grades. There will also be several "projects" assigned as well. These projects will be more difficult homework problems and computer work.
Work expected:
This is a very difficult class. Expect to put in lots of time. You will be expected to keep up with the material by reading the book and doing homework. (Do not forget to read the book!)
Tests and Grades:
There will be several in class exams and many quizzes. The quizzes should be very similar to the homework and lecture. These will be "pop" quizzes. I will drop 2 quiz scores. The tests are scheduled as below. The tests may be open book or you may be allowed a "formula sheet." We will discuss this near the time of each test.
8% Homework
10% Projects
12% Quizzes
45% Test 1 January 30
Test 2 March 18
Test 3 April 8
25% Final May 8, 8-10PM
Grades will be assigned approximately on the scale
 84-87 B+72-75 C+60-63D+
92-100 A80-83 B68-71 C55-60 D0-54 E
88-81 A-76-79 B-64-67 C-
I may slightly adjust this scale at the end of the semester (in your favor only).
Your grades will be available online at http://sierra.westminstercollege.edu/cgi-bin/WWWgradebook.pl.
You will have to register to be able to view your grades and you should do this as soon as possible.
Calculators and Computers:
Calculators and computers can be quite helpful when doing homework. I use a HP calculator, but the TI is a great calculator as well. We will occasionally use calculators in class and they will be allowed on the quizzes and tests. Maple is a wonderful computer program that is useful to use as well. You will be responsible to use Maple for some of your homework assignments.
